The Family Physician
Medical care in the UK extends back way before the inception of the National Health Service in 1946. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the family doctor was a vital cog in the organisation of society and no drama or comedy or tragedy was complete without the medical attendant who was as readily availably as the house-hold servants. He (in those times) was always available (send for the doctor) to supply advice to the head of the household and his kin. The vicar, the solicitor and the doctor made up the tripartite support structure of society, particularly in times of trouble, but also at times of celebration. Hence the concept of the Three Estates. This concept of family doctor is for me enshrined in the study in oils
“The Doctor” by Sir Samuel Luke Fildes.
